Version 2.2 (2/2000)
Well if you made it this far then you already know how to use the system. Just point
and click on the main topic you would like a agency listing for. Then within that sub
topic each agency we have listed will become available. By clicking on a name you will
retrieve the information on that agency such as phone number, street address and what kind
of volunteers they need. If the Information is of interest to you leave the screen open
and move to the next column. You can simultaneously display two listings at any one
time. When you have the listings of interest use the print feature of your browser
to get a copy of the information. If you didn't find what you wanted use the back command
found at the bottom of any page to return to the last index.
Why Not. I couldn't think of a easier way to view different categories of information
all at the same time. That system was intended to be used as a method for quickly finding
information for the callers to the VOLUNTEER CENTER OF GREATER BRIDGEPORT. The system
allowed for three categories to be viewed at any one time I'm sure if you wanted to you
could dig through the file cabinet every time somebody wanted to know the number for the
YMCA but now it is only a click away, not to mention all the other agencies with a similar
mission. Why fight it SEAN is just better. Also new to S.E.A.N. v2.1 is the ability
to view the alphabetical master list of all of the agency files ( now over 90 listings ).
Also the web based version found at both { www.beardedman.net/calls/index.html
& Work SHUs } now allows
for email submission of updates to existing SEAN Files as well as the addition of
new listings, and hyperlinking to agency web sites. S.E.A.N. v2.1 has decreased in size
from 110k to 86k while adding more than 3 dozen new listings. S.E.A.N. v2.2 marks the begining of its migration to Sacred Heart University. In the upcomming version 3 S.E.A.N. will also list Campus Based Clubs and service groups, service learning class information, and other volunteer positions aimed at SHU students.
Would McDonalds tell you what is in the secret sauce? No, but fear not I'll tell you
how this all works. Thank the Internet. This whole system is HTML and a touch of JAVA
:just to show off: The pull down bar is JAVA code and the rest is basic HTML. The three
columns are frames each actually showing the same file that holds the pull down bar. From
that screen you then travel to each of the sub directories, each with its own index. This
index calls the individual file that holds the information :like phone number etc: SEAN v2
has left total compatibility that was it's roots and is no longer instantly compatible
with the older versions of windows. This was done to allow for better internet integration,
and to allow for easy maintenance of our web site version. If you wanted to run this as a
resident directory on an older computer you would need to change all references to .html
to .htm. There are actually many more uses for SEAN and SEAN is
intranet/internet capable.
Well you could always pay me to come out to your place and do it for you. Oh I see, I told you how it works and now you want to do it your self FINE. Version 2 no longer uses sub directories, which allows for a much easier updating process. Now all that you need to do is add the new .html (or .htm) file holding the information into the "all" sub directory and then add a link into the all index.html. Then you can add links in the other appropriate directory pages. IT ISN'T TO LATE TO CALL ME:O) if you want to update a file you need to open that particular file from the 'all' directory ( usually on the c: drive) edit the information and save.
The web based versions also have a form you can use to add your agency to our listings.
Simply fill out the form, checking off the sub category boxes you feel match your areas of
service and send it in. Your listing will be added as soon as we can verify your
information.
Sean Otterspoor also know as the BeardedMAN is the evil mastermind behind this aptly named program. Sean created and continues to run the Step by Step program, and the now closed volunteer center web site www.cometovolunteer.org. S.E.A.N. was originally designed to run on a 386 with windows 3.0 but has since be updated to run on the '95 -'98 generations of windows. Sean is a Biology Major at Sacred Heart University who also runs the Habitat for Humanity Campus chapter and serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bridgeport. Sean served as a AmeriCorps volunteer in '97 and was untill its closing Program Coordinator at the Volunteer Center of Greater Bridgeport.
